Collaborative Work: 4 Keys to Success in Interdisciplinary Teams

By: Carlos De Santiago

In today's business environment, teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration have become essential for the success of products and services. The ability to speak different languages within a company, from marketing, development knowledge, data mining, design, and business, is increasingly valued.

To achieve effective communication and contribute to the company's goals, it is crucial that each team member has a comprehensive understanding of the different areas and their functions. While you don't have to master and be an expert in each of them, knowing their processes and understanding them generally is a great starting point.

There are 4 aspects I consider key when working collaboratively, whether internally or on projects with clients.

T-Shaped Skills: The Foundation of Collaborative Work

The concept of T-Shaped Skills, popularized by IDEO in the 1980s, remains fundamental in modern collaborative work. This model is based on the idea that professionals should have a deep skill in their area of expertise (the vertical part of the “T”) and, at the same time, broad and general knowledge in other related areas (the horizontal part of the “T”). This combination allows team members to contribute value in various areas of an organization and collaborate more effectively.

Open Mind: Accepting the Diversity of Ideas

In a collaborative team, open-mindedness is crucial. None of us has all the answers, and that's okay. Being willing to consider alternative solutions, diverse opinions, and different contexts broadens the team's vision and fosters innovation. Diversity of thought enriches the creative process and allows for more robust and effective solutions to be found.

Clear Tasks and Defined Responsibility

For a project to flow efficiently, it is essential to have clear tasks and well-defined responsibilities. Knowing what needs to be done and who is in charge of each task avoids confusion, reduces redundancy, and ensures that work progresses in parallel. Clarity in task assignment facilitates coordination and allows the team to focus on achieving project goals.

Clear Goals: The Guide to Decision Making

In collaborative work, having clear objectives is fundamental. A clear and shared focus helps align the team's efforts and facilitates decision-making. When everyone understands where the project is heading and what the goal is, it's easier to prioritize tasks, identify problems, and adjust strategies to stay on the right track.

More than a trend, collaborative work is a necessity in the business world today. Adopting an approach based on T-Shaped Skills, maintaining an open mind, clearly defining tasks and responsibilities, and having well-established objectives are keys to success in interdisciplinary teams. By integrating these principles, organizations can improve efficiency, foster innovation, and achieve their goals more effectively.
