Are we close to talking with something non-human?
AI and Its Ability to Understand Us

By: Eric Silva

It is evident that the way we relate to each other is complex, even more so the way we use language to communicate. Surely, on more than one occasion, we've found ourselves in a situation where we express something, and the other person's interpretation differs significantly from our original intention., And this is because communication goes beyond grammatical rules or verb tenses (which we worked so hard to learn in elementary school).

When we say something, the person listening not only interprets our words, but also, unconsciously, assimilates other elements: intonation, voice volume, the way we gesture, and pauses between words. Given that humans often face linguistic challenges when trying to communicate and understand each other, it's not surprising that artificial intelligence can also stumble over these obstacles when interpreting information. This is why there's a branch of artificial intelligence called Natural Language Processing (NLP).

NLP is a mix of computational linguistics, statistical models, deep learning y machine learning with the fundamental objective of investigating the interactions that occur between people with other people and with machines.

The question is, can this benefit us in any way or is it just another step towards living in an episode of “Black Mirror”? It could be said that today almost everyone has enjoyed the advantages that Natural Language Processing has given us.

Some of the applications of this tool are:

Search engine results
Natural Language Processing (NLP) plays a crucial role in how search results are presented on platforms like Google. This technology helps to refine and personalize results, making them increasingly relevant to what you truly want to find.

Voice recognition
In voice recognition, a person's identity is evaluated by analyzing their voice as they pronounce words, comparing it to predefined commands. Aspects like accent, intonation, frequency, and pitch are considered in this process. Brands in Mexico, like Telcel, have incorporated voice recognition technologies to improve the user experience in automated telephone services.

Text translators
Automatic text translators have been improving as Natural Language Processing has advanced. These systems take into account not only the character set but also the various uses of a word, regionalisms, and the sentence's intent. Companies like Grupo Bimbo have leveraged this technology to facilitate internal communication and globalize their messages, adapting to different audiences and markets.

Besides these three, there are numerous applications of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that, without us realizing it, are transforming the way we live and interact in an increasingly connected world. cyberpunk
