Happy people, efficient processes, and scalable design tools
By: Cecilia Rodriguez
From October 17th to 20th of this year, the first edition of the conference DesignOps Latam, a community that has rapidly climbed among design professionals and whose mission is to mature the practice of this discipline in Latin America.
With a total of 18 conferences and a day dedicated to independent workshops, the event not only offered enriching knowledge but also provided a dynamic space for interaction and collaboration among design professionals.
But, beyond participating in the event, let's define what DesignOps is. According to Nielsen Norman, Design Ops, or Design Operations, refers to the orchestration and optimization of People, Processes, and Tools to amplify the value and impact of design at scale. This involves addressing challenges such as the growth and evolution of design teams (People), the creation of efficient workflows (Processes), and the improvement of the quality and impact of design outcomes (Tools).
Therefore, the purpose of implementing DesignOps is to enhance the value of design, foster collaboration, creativity, and innovation. In addition to ensuring the quality, scalability, and consistency of the team's deliverables to generate a positive impact on the experience of the product or service being designed.
There are 4 central factors, mentioned in DesignOps Handbook.
- Business EscalationAs businesses grow, the need to efficiently optimize and coordinate design processes arises. Furthermore, with ever-expanding design teams, a structure is required that facilitates effective management and collaboration.
- People FirstRecognizing, rewarding, and promoting designers is essential to keeping a team motivated and engaged.
- High ExpectationsThe demand for better design experiences and more effective results requires the implementation of these practices.
- Diversity and Inclusion In a context where diversity and inclusion are essential, training and practice are required to foster diverse and inclusive teams.
In summary
The fundamental purpose of DesignOps is to implement processes and measures that support scalable solutions to overcome these challenges, thereby allowing designers to focus fully on design and research.
