Creativity as a form of thought

When we hear “creativity,” it's normal to think of art, sculpture, music... The word comes from “creative,” and we assume being creative means being artistic. 👩🏻‍🎨

However, creativity is the ability we have to create something new, something never seen before, from ideas to solutions. In the business world, this translates into innovation. And, if innovation is the key to the growth and survival of businesses, then creativity is too.

What if I told you that creativity is a form of thinking?

What if I told you that creativity should be conceived of as a way of acting, of being, of thinking, and not just as a noun?

Let's change “to have creativity” to “to think creatively”.

Whatever your field or sector, if you approach it with creativity, you will find new and better solutions, and with them, much more success. As Tom and David Kelley say in their book Creative Confidence: «You don't need to change careers or move to Silicon Valley to change how you think.”.

We are all creative! Let's imagine creativity as a muscle that can be strengthened and nourished with effort and experience until we achieve creative confidence.

How do I gain that creative confidence?

It's not very difficult to do it, Tom and David Kelly in Creative Confidence They narrate a series of steps we can follow to have and improve this quality.

Turn it over From Design Thinking Creative confidence. Solve problems through people-centered creative processes that open new opportunities for innovation, generate and earn creative confidence through this, and overcome the fears that have blocked your creativity in the past.

Dare (From fear to courage). Accept your failures, figure out what went wrong and what needs to be improved next time to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Believe in your ability to create positive change and in the courage to take action. Remember that, as Hungarian essayist György Konrád said, “courage is just the accumulation of small steps.”.

Find the spark (From a blank page to insight). Be aware of the inspiration you find in your daily life. Understand the needs and context of the people for whom you are creating solutions. The best insights are found when you go out into the world and empathize.

Take the leap (From Planning to Action). Quickly turn ideas into actions (always have a “do something” in your mindset). Action will allow you to learn at an accelerated pace and this will lead to earlier success. As David Kelly, the founder of IDEO, he said, “fail fast to succeed sooner.”.

Search (From duty to passion). Find your place. What are you good at? What do others hire you for? What is your lifelong calling?.

Team up (Groups with Creative Confidence). Exchange ideas without fear of judgment, and you'll see your thoughts stimulate others. Gather, combine, mix, or merge life experiences and contrasting perspectives to generate creative tension that leads to more innovative and interesting ideas.

Move (Creative confidence on the go). Strive to think divergently and creatively. Utilize various tools: mind maps, fifteen seconds of brilliance, empathy maps, I want – I desire, quick visits, a nickname warm-up, customer journey maps, the portfolio exercise, among others.

What follows (Leverage creative confidence.) Squeeze your creative confidence through action, taking one step at a time, experiencing a series of small wins.
